Pirate Copy Made Me Buy Theatre Ticket

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

A few days ago a friend of mine handed me a copy of x-men origins: wolverine. you know the one that leaked to the web a few weeks back. usually i turn down these offers coz hey – i like movies. i like watching them on the big screen, so why go for second best. but i’m also a die-hard comics fan and well… the temptation was just too great. i slipped it into the dvd player and you know what? i was so dissapointed. not at the movie, but at the quality. no sound effects, no big bangs, no visually stunning special effects. and what was frustrating is you could tell that there’s a cool movie there. 10 minutes later i pressed stop, called up my bros (yes, at 37 we still love comics) and bought tickets to see it on saturday.

hell i’ll wait another day and pay up the few bucks, but at least i won’t feel like i was getting played

hell yes, i’m gonna watch this flick

Monday, February 16th, 2009

I think people all over the world have been waiting on this movie for generations.

After all the sappy Nazi-era movies Hollywood has spilled out (yes they’re important and most of them very good), it’s time we got a real, kick ass, in your face, action packed, nazi killing movie with the one and only Hollywood madman, Tarantino, and Brad Pitt at the helm.

According to IMDB the synopsis is “During World War II a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as “The Basterds” are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris which is targeted by the soldiers”

Even “The Office” alum BJ Novak pitches in to kick some nazi ass.

hollywood execs in their 30′s

Monday, February 9th, 2009

yes a wave of nostalgia has hit Hollywood. but it’s not the usual “hey let’s make movies about the groovy 60′s man” but a nostalgia for the TV series that dominated the 70′s and 80′s.

i remember waiting all week for the new episodes of “Star Trek”, “GI JOE”, “Transformers” and such, really cool “culture breaking” TV shows.  now boom! they’re on the big screen, bigger and badder than ever.

i know we’ve seen star trek movies for about 3 decades and transformers is just a new installment of the franchise, but there is a big difference between 2009 and the earlier movies.

bigger budgets, A list directors and producers, re – imagination of style and functuality. and most of all, you can tell that the executives behind these movies are bringing in their childhood memories to these productions.

so first of all, thank you hollywood for bringing my TV shows back to life and what’s next – a $100,000,000 budget “dennis the menace”?

new movie – i love you man

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

ok whenever i see paul rudd and jason segal in a movie i know 2 things

1. this will be a juvenile suck bomb

2. i’m definately going to see it

the apatow brand of retarded-colleboy-humour has caught like wildfire throwing us into a confusion of self loathing and hysterical laughter.

but you know what, maybe it’s just what we need in these weirdly troubled times

In I Love You, Man, a comedy from John Hamburg (Along Came Polly, co-writer of Meet The Parents, Meet The Fockers, Zoolander), Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd, Knocked Up The 40 Year Old Virgin) is a successful real estate agent who, upon getting engaged to the woman of his dreams, Zooey, (The Offices Rashida Jones), discovers, to his dismay and chagrin, that he has no male friend close enough to serve as his Best Man. Peter immediately sets out to rectify the situation, embarking on a series of bizarre and awkward man-dates, before meeting Sydney Fife (Jason Segel, Forgetting Sarah Marshall), a charming, opinionated man with whom he instantly bonds. But the closer the two men get, the more Peters relationship with Zooey suffers, ultimately forcing him to choose between his fiancée and his new found bro, in a story that comically explores what it truly means to be a friend

rocknrolla – the new guy ritchie movie

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

guy ritchie is back baby! not good enough for the screen but definately rent it on DVD

well, not fully back but getting there.
this is not the guy ritchie we know and love from and “snatch” and “lock, stock and 2 smoking barrels”, but i can tell that the divorce from maddona brought back the destructive creative side of our favorite britsh director.
the plot according to IMDB “In London, a real-estate scam puts millions of pounds up for grabs, attracting some of the city’s scrappiest tough guys and its more established underworld types, all of whom are looking to get rich quick. While the city’s seasoned criminals vie for the cash, an unexpected player — a drugged out rock ‘n’ roller presumed to be dead but very much alive — has a multi-million dollar prize fall into his hands”.
all true but the plot is really just secondary to the moviegoing experience which is based on what made guy ritchie so famous: sex, drugs, rocknroll, violence, whacked out characters and cockney accents.
my advise: wait for the movie to come out on DVD, light up, leave your expectations behind and enjoy the ride.

the day the earth stood still – really?

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

dtess-poster1actually. no. na ah.

this is an average movie at best. wait for the DVD.

don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a bad film. just not good enough to make you reach into your recession beaten pocket and shill out the price of a movie ticket.

the plot: alien spheres start landing in different locations around earth. one of these UFO spheres spawns our hero keanu reeves (great casting – keanu looks way more believable as an alien than a human being). we quickly find out that keanu’s character, klaatu, was sent here to save the earth from us humans. the rest of the movie is pretty obvious as klaatu connects with dr. helen benson (the gorgeous jennifer connolly) who tries to persuade him that the human race is worth saving.

the truth is, after watching the film you’ll be pretty convinced that we are not worth saving. at least hollywood isn’t

my favorite quote “If the Earth dies, you die. If the human race dies, the Earth survives” can’t really argue with that.
